Students who obtain college approval can pursue a personalized major in African American Studies. We will be happy to work with you to design your program, and to guide you through the application process, which is detailed here. You must have a 3.0 minimum GPA and you must submit your proposal no later than the beginning of your junior year. Twelve courses are required, and no more than four of these courses can be independent studies. You must have a full-time faculty adviser, along with the approval of the chair and Dean in order to pursue this major.
Students currently enrolled in the self-designed major often pick up African American Studies as a second major complementing studies in such areas as psychology or sociology.
