50th Anniversary Celebration

The Department of African American Studies at The College of New Jersey celebrated its 50th Anniversary of its founding with a celebratory gala in March 2023 at Trenton Country Club. This celebration was actually postponed from 2020 when Covid-protocols prevented an in-person celebration.

The sold-out gala celebration was a big success with a packed ballroom of college faculty and administrators, students and alumni. With a nod to the past and to honor the department’s history, four prominent founding faculty members were remembered: former department chair Gloria Harper Dickinson, former department chair and playwright Don Evans, professor Stephen Chukumba Sr., and professor Eloise Williams. The department was pleased that descendants of these four important faculty members attended the gala at the department’s invitation as VIP guests.

Funds raised through gala ticket sales will be used to financially assist study abroad experiences for AAS majors and minors to study at the College’s South Africa study center in Cape Town.
